Interview with Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown

George Manney first met Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr in 1969. The following conversation with Kim took place on October 28th, 2002:

Geo: The Savoy Brown lineup I first saw was w/ ChrisYoulden, you-Kim Simmonds, Tony Stevens, Lonesome Dave & Roger Earl @ the Main Point. Was this show on the First American tour in 69, or the second half of 69? And do you remember this show? Backstage photos of that show are on the Geo Archives page: Savoy Brown

Kim: I remember the show because I've been reminded about it a lot but the details evade me.  I first brought the band over in early 69.

Geo: Do you remember a show here in Philly @ the Electric Factory Sept. 25-26, 1970 w/ Pink Floyd & Chicken Shack? If so any highlights of that tour for you?

Kim: Yes, I do remember this...I think there might have been a competition thing going with Pink Floyd...I don't think anybody talked.  Though I, myself, was quite shy at the time.
Chicken Shack were one of my favorite UK blues bands.

Geo: When was the last tour in the States w/ Chris Youlden & Savoy Brown?

Kim: Don't remember...that's one for the archivists out there.  Probably 1969.  I was doing a lot of guitar work and stepping on Chris' vision of himself.  He left to do a solo thing.

Geo: Another show here in Philadelphia was @ the Spectrum Aug. 19, 1970 w/ Dr. John & Chicken Shack. Do you remember that show or any highlights of that tour?

Kim: I remember doing the Spectrum with Sly and the Family Stone...but not the Dr John show.  Very weird going around on that turning stage.  A different audience every time you looked up!

Geo: Another tour that hit the Spectrum in Philly was March 15, 1974 w/ Deep Purple. Any thoughts on that show or tour?

Kim: Lots of fun with Stan Webb (ex Chicken Shack)...nice songs from Miller Anderson (singer).
Deep Purple were a nice bunch of guys and I had been a fan of Richie Blackmore's since the days he was with the early beat groups in London.  Partied a lot!

Geo: Do you have a best L.P. that you cut w/ the Chris, Dave, Tony & Earl lineup?

Kim: Raw Sienna

Geo: Any plans to write w/ Chris Youlden?

Kim: He doesn't keep in touch...bad blood I think.

Geo:  Is your Gibson Flying V  vintage, & if so, what year is it?

Kim: My original V is now in the hands of a collector (Japan?).  I use a copy of that one.

Geo:  How did you like playing @ the Tin Angel here in Philly, July 2002?

Kim: It's great..small audience of real fans...but climbing those stairs is tough!

Geo: When is the new CD to be released & on what label?   Who is producing?

Kim: I produced the new CD and the artwork is now in preparation.  It'll probably come out on my own Vanity label.  This is such a good climate for artists like myself nowadays...we can make our own records and sell them just as well through the internet and via gigs.

Geo: Thank you Kim for taking the time for our Q & A  for Geo Archives......All the best with the new CD!  Cheers - George
