SAN JOSE, Calif .– (COMMERCIAL THREAD) – Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CDNS) today announced the launch of Cadence® Tensilica® HiFi 1 DSP, which enhances user experience by delivering groundbreaking audio / voice innovation for small battery-powered devices such as TWS headphones, hearing aids, bluetooth headsets, smart watches and other portable devices. The ultra-low power consumption of DSP HiFi 1 extends the duration of voice communication and music playback, making it possible to always listen to voice commands with minimal impact on battery life. This enables low-cost consumer and mobile devices, as well as automotive and industrial devices, to offer increased functionality with low power consumption.
A number of converging trends are driving the need for low power audio / voice capabilities in a small form factor. Increasingly, hearing aids and wearable devices are adopting the Low Complexity Communications (LC3) codec standardized by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) in 2020. Or always listening, devices that respond to voice wake-up commands and devices even adopt these capabilities. Finally, to activate these devices and apps, a small form factor and longer battery life are essential.
âThe low complexity communication codecs (LC3 and LC3plus) co-invented by Fraunhofer help to minimize the power consumption of Bluetooth devices with limited battery. Fraunhofer and Cadence have a long history of partnering on various codecs, including LC3 / LC3plus, which Cadence has optimized on their Tensilica HiFi DSPs, âsaid Manfred Lutzky, Head of Audio for Communications at Fraunhofer IIS. âWe are delighted to see them build on this experience with the new DSP HiFi 1 optimized in terms of energy and cycle for LC3 and LC3plus. The HiFi 1 DSP embodies the codec’s unprecedented ultra-low power levels, which should provide relief to small audible and portable battery-powered devices with additional features and help accelerate the widespread adoption of LC3 and LC3plus.
The HiFi 1 DSP offers super low power encoding and playback of LC3 and other Bluetooth codecs, as well as super low power keyword detection for voice wake-up, all within the smaller HiFi DSP. Compared to DSP HiFi 3, the industry’s most popular audio DSP for target applications, DSP HiFi 1 offers:
11 to 16% bottom surface
60 to 73% more cycle and energy efficiency for “OK ââGoogle” keyword detection and ML-based people detection applications
Over 18% cycle efficiency and 14% power efficiency for LC3 decoding
Cadence’s HiFi 1 DSP dramatically reduces the power required to run the always-on class of AI applications, such as TensorFlow Lite Micro (TFLM) networks, voice wake-up and person detection, enabling Limited battery devices run longer of time, âsaid Pete Warden, technical manager of TFLM at Google. âCadence and Google have a long history of collaborating on TFLM, and we’re excited to continue this collaboration as Cadence pushes the boundaries of power and performance. ”
Features and Benefits of DSP HiFi 1:
Special instructions including arithmetic coding for LC3 encoding and decoding make HiFi 1 DSP the most energy efficient DSP for Bluetooth LE Audio
Instructions for ITU-T3GPP standardized BASOP 2019 speed up voice codecs and perform them with high power efficiency, thus increasing talk time
ISA neural network and load / store accelerate keyword detection and other machine learning workloads for reduced power consumption, while ISA optimized for reduced memory access improves performance with small cache sizes
Efficient signal processing reduces energy and cycles for audio and speech pre-processing and post-processing
The optional Low Latency Vector Floating Point Unit (VFPU) provides higher FP throughput with lower power consumption.
Boolean vector register improves energy efficiency for conditional code
âIntelligent and contextual processing is becoming essential for next-generation hearing aids to provide users with a better hearing experience with increased utility and convenience,â said Mike Demler, senior analyst at The Linley Group. âA mixture of machine learning and traditional DSP algorithms permeates these applications, but battery life and form factor cannot be compromised. Cadence has established a strong leadership position with its widely adopted and supported Tensilica HiFi DSPs for audio, voice and voice applications. The new HiFi 1 DSP goes one step further by enabling these emerging target applications in a compact design to skillfully combine AI, codec and DSP performance at ultra-low power levels for energy-efficient designs.
âHiFi DSPs are widely adopted in current generation TWS headphones and Bluetooth headsets,â said David Glasco, vice president of research and development for Tensilica IP at Cadence. âThe advent of the LC3 and broader market trends have paved the way for next-generation hearing aids to deliver a superior user experience and longer battery life. With many speech and voice algorithms migrating to AI, we are also seeing a huge increase in use cases for analytics and better sound quality in TWS headphones. The compact HiFi 1 DSP enables these new use cases with ultra-low power consumption, bringing to the mass market always-on, always-in-tune capabilities that were heretofore the privilege of top-of-the-range products. range.
In general availability now, the HiFi 1 DSP supports Cadence’s intelligent system design⢠strategy by enabling SoC design excellence with best-in-class technology. For more information, please visit www.cadence.com/go/HiFi-1.
