Chennai metro trains to obtain audiovisual information display screens | Chennai News

CHENNAI: A large LED screen will soon broadcast audio and video alerts to passengers traveling by metro to the approaching station, to major landmarks around it, and to food services. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is expected to install such screens on all trains by early 2022.
A prototype of the screen will be ready in six months. The digital screens will also help to increase CMRL’s non-ticketing revenue options as they will also allow advertising to be displayed.
A metro official said a company was awarded a contract to customize and design screens that would fit the space above automatic train doors. “A prototype of the display will be ready by the end of this year and our entire fleet will have an LED display by the start of 2022,” the official said. “Each of the four cars on a train will have these screens above the automatic doors,” the official added. The screens will be installed in Metro Rail’s fleet of 52 trainsets, including the 10 new trainsets.
Officials said the displays will automatically broadcast visual and audio information on routes in the two-lane phase 1 and phase 1 CMRL extension lines, as well as inter-lane operations between lane 1 and lane 2.
There may be two screens in each car, one showing the route map and informing commuters when the train is approaching a station, the other containing information on the amenities available at the station, refueling, intermodal facilities and landmarks around the station. The screens will be linked to the metro’s signaling system and will display information relating to a particular station and locality as the train approaches the station.
The existing fleet has static and dynamic route maps installed above the train doors. The dynamic display has flashing lights next to each station name as the train approaches that station.
