New Delhi: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur today announced that India will be the official country of honor of the next Marche’ Du Filmorganized parallel to the 75and edition of the Cannes Film Festival, in France. Outlining the decision, the Minister said: “This is the first time that the Marché du Film has an official country of honor, and this particular attention will continue each year with different nations in the spotlight in future editions”. France and India are notably celebrating the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, the visit of the Prime Ministers to Paris and the meeting with President Macron take on even more importance in this context. It is in this important diplomatic context that India was chosen as “Country of Honor” at the Cannes Film Festival Market.

Elaborating on the announcement, Shri Thakur said the country of honor status thus ensured India’s presence as Focus Country at the Film Market Opening Night organized at Majestic Beach with a focus on India, its cinema, its culture & its heritage. Adding an Indian flavor to this night would be special performances by Indian choir groups along with folk music and fireworks. The cuisine served would be Indian as well as French.

The minister further announced that India is also a “Pays d’Honneur at Cannes Next, in which 5 new start-ups would have the opportunity to pitch to the audiovisual industry. Ten professionals will take part in Animation Day networking.

Another highlight of India’s participation in this edition of the Cannes Film Festival is the world premiere of the film “Rocketry” produced by Shri. R. Madhavan. The film will be screened at the Palais des Festivals during the market screening on May 19, 2022.

India received a possibility of pitching 5 films selected in the “Goes to Cannes” section”. These films are part of the Work In Progress lab under the Film Bazaar:

1. Baghjan by Jaicheng Zxai Dohutia – Assamese, Moran

2. Bailadila by Shailendra Sahu – Hindi, Chhattisgarhi

3. Ek Jagah Apni (A space of our own) by Ektara Collective – Hindi

4. Follower of Harshad Nalawade – Marathi, Kannada, Hindi

5. Shivamma by Jai Shankar – Kannada

A movie theater called Olympia Screen was dedicated to India on May 22, 2022 for the screening of “unreleased films”. There are 5 films that have been selected in this category.

India’s Satyajit Ray Centenary Celebration Continues in Cannes with a Remastered Classic of Satyajit Ray’s Classic – Pratidwandi will be screened at the Cannes Classic Cinema section of the beach.

A dedicated India Forum, an hour-long conference, is being held on the main stage, comprised of entertainment industry executives and would position “India as the content hub of the world”. The India Forum would bring together hundreds of guests and be broadcast live online.

Speaking on the features of the India pavilion this time, the minister said the pavilion will have the sole purpose of making India the “content hub of the world”. The pavilion will be inaugurated on the morning of May 18, 2022. It will showcase Indian cinema across the country’s linguistic, cultural and regional diversities and serve as a networking platform for delegates from the global community, aiming to establish international partnerships in film shooting, distribution, production, script development, technology, film sales promotion and syndication.
