Kim Kardashian says her comments about ‘working’ to women were ‘taken out of context’

(NOTE LANGUAGE) Kim Kardashian responded to the backlash she received after telling the women to hustle each other harder.

Kardashian said hello america co-presenter Robin Robert in a new interview that the comments she made in a Variety profile earlier this month were “taken out of context”.

In the profile, Kardashian, who turned her reality TV fame into a business empire, said, “I have the best advice for women in business. Get up and work. It seems like no one wants to work these days.

The comments drew criticism, with some online commentators calling out the privilege which they say could have contributed to the SKIMS founder’s success.

Kardashian’s quote was even at the center of a joke made at the Oscars on Sunday night, with the co-host Regina Room repeating it to Dame, nominated for Best Supporting Actress Judi Dench.

“This is a Kim Kardashian quote: ‘Work harder.’ That’s what we need you to do,” Hall joked to Dench.

In an interview this weekend ahead of the premiere of her family’s new Hulu show, The Kardashians, Kim said of her quote, “It wasn’t a general statement towards women or the feeling that I don’t respect work or think they don’t work hard. I know they do. It was taken out of context, but I’m so sorry if it was received that way.

Kardashian explained that she had already been asked in the Variety interview about being “famous for being famous,” which she says led her to respond so forcefully.

“That statement I said was without questions or conversation around it, and it became a really contextless soundbite,” Kardashian said.

She added, “That sound phrase came from the notion and question just before, which was, ‘After 20 years in the business, you’re famous for being famous,’ and my whole tone and attitude changed with the previous question this led to this question about what advice you would give to women.

Kardashian’s new interview with Roberts will premiere as part of a primetime special on ABC News on April 6 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and air the following day on Hulu. The special includes new interviews with Kim, Khloe and Kourtney kardashians and their “momager”, Kris Jenner.

Their new show on Hulu will premiere on April 14.
