Microsoft Edge 97 released: here’s what’s new

Microsoft Edge 97 Stable is now available. The new version of Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge web browser is a security and feature update.

Edge desktop users can load edge: // settings / help in the browser’s address bar to view the installed version and run a manual check for updates. Edge automatically installs updates by default, but it may take some time for updates to roll out to the entire browser population. Since Edge 97 is a security update, users may want to update the browser early to protect it from potential attacks.

Microsoft Edge 97: new features

Microsoft Edge 97 is a smaller update in terms of features. The new version includes all security updates from Project Chromium as well as five security updates specific to Microsoft Edge. Interested users can view Edge-specific security updates here.

Here is a brief summary of the security updates:

Here is an overview of regular features and improvements:

Microsoft Edge automatically switches to https

  • Automatic HTTPS mode is being deployed on all stable Edge installations. You can check out our review of the automatic HTTPS feature when it first lands in mid-2021. Load edge: // settings / privacy to check if “Automatically switching to more secure connections with automatic HTTPS is still available.” Automatic HTTPS mode includes two options:
    • Upgrade to HTTPS if available, but allow HTTP connections if HTTPS is not supported.
    • Upgrade to HTTPs and do not allow HTTP connections.
  • Support for Microsoft Endpoint Data Loss Prevention (DLP) on Mac OS.
  • Legacy WebSQL functionality will automatically be blocked from third-party frameworks. A policy is available until the release of Microsoft Edge 101 to re-enable the feature.
  • Users with work or school accounts are automatically signed in to websites with the work or school account connected to the current profile, even if multiple accounts are available. Users can turn the feature on or off under Settings> Profile preferences.
  • Microsoft Edge’s new Citations feature gives students “a better way to manage and generate citations when researching online.” Quotes can be enabled in Collections or from Settings and more. The feature automatically generates quotes when enabled.
  • Control Flow Guard on Windows 8 or later. Edge “will begin to support finer-grained protection by addressing memory corruption vulnerabilities and protecting indirect calls.”

Edge 97 launches with several new strategies. Some control features and behaviors introduced in Edge 7, others add more control over the browser. The full list is available here.
