A new documentary focusing on poetry, prose and the art of the end Doors leader Jim Morrison is developed through a partnership between JAM Inc. – Morrison’s estate managers – and production company Gunpowder & Sky.
The film will incorporate the singer’s recently unearthed diaries, as well as rare family film footage. The news of the documentary follows the recent release of Jim Morrison’s Collected Works: Poetry, Journals, Transcriptions, and Lyrics. The book which features most of Morrison’s previously published work, as well as an abundance of unpublished writings, including the aforementioned journals.
“Jim was a poet, writer and filmmaker long before he thought of music,” said the CEO of JAM Inc. Jeff Jampol tell Billboard. “All these decades everyone’s been talking about rock star Jim Morrison, which he sure was. But we really felt it was time to level the playing field and talk about these other aspects of Jim, which were not as well known or celebrated or discussed.
Jampol also notes that producers are looking for a director “who understands the importance, depth and seriousness” of Morrison.
“You need a director who empathizes with people, artists and art, [who] understands the story and the context, ”says Jampol. He adds that he hopes the film, which does not yet have a title, will be ready for release by the end of 2022 or early 2023.
July 3 marked the 50th anniversary of Morrison’s death at the age of 27 in Paris.
