Video rendering of an automated prefab housing factory

RIALTO, Calif. – Plant Prefab signed a long-term lease in December to open the nation’s first automated factory dedicated to the efficient and sustainable construction of multi-family developments and custom single-family homes.

In this animated video, viewers get a glimpse of operations inside the company’s new 270,000 square foot facility which will be located on 17 acres in the Tejon Ranch Commerce Center 25 miles south of Bakersfield, Calif. , and will serve as Plant Prefab’s third factory.

The facility will be purpose-built to efficiently fabricate custom pre-engineered modular and panel construction elements. The plant will be Plant Prefab’s first automated facility, using sophisticated machinery driven by Plant Prefab’s digital modeling data, which the company claims can achieve even greater production speed and a level of quality assurance and cost, time and material efficiency unmatched by any other custom housing manufacturer.

It will serve as the first regional production center for Plant Prefab, expanding the company’s service area to the entire western United States and employing up to 440 people. Construction of the $30 million plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

“The launch of our hub is a crucial step in Plant Prefab’s broader mission to make architectural and sustainable housing more accessible, as it allows us to expand our capabilities from single-family housing and small multi-family housing to large-scale developments. volume and scale – including student, affordable and market-priced housing for real estate, hospitality and business developers,” said Steve Glenn, Founder and CEO of Plant Prefab. “The significant expansion of the end markets we serve helps solve critical housing issues in markets with limited supply and labor. Our expanded capabilities will allow us to deliver an even faster and more predictable, repeatable, and sustainable build solution for developers and consumers. »

The central facility will enable the full industrialization of Plant Prefab’s patented factory building system, which combines advanced engineering with specialized factory panels and modules to build custom housing 20-50% faster than traditional construction methods with up to 30% less waste to a 10-25% savings in labor-constrained markets.

Plant Prefab’s digital modeling tools and processes, which the company has optimized over the past five years, are fueling efficiencies. Bridging the gap between design and construction, Plant Prefab’s digital modeling coordinates the routing of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing through the structure, dramatically reducing rework and delays; standardizes the production of custom housing projects into panel and modular building components; and advances the advanced finishing application in the production of precast walls.

Plant Prefab’s Tejon Ranch production facility is expected to produce 900,000 square feet of living space per year, the equivalent of 800 housing units. The facility’s panel production lines have been specifically designed to efficiently accommodate the unique dimensions, performance standards and finish specifications of each project, and the facility will be capable of producing complete modules with all finishes, accessories and fixtures for minimal on-site finishing work.
